Heathrow Terminal 1, also known as the London Airport Terminal, was the first terminal at Heathrow Airport in London, England. It was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on March 29, 1968 and was in operation until its closure on June 29, 2015.
The terminal was designed to handle flights for major airlines such as British European Airways (BEA) and British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), as well as independent airlines. The terminal was built to handle around nine million passengers per year and featured a single story, circular building with a diameter of around 400 feet, with a central hub and four pier-like extensions.
During its operation, Terminal 1 was known for its innovative design and technology. It was the first terminal to feature a fully automated baggage handling system, electronic flight information display systems, and an underground train system to transport passengers between the terminal and the aircraft.
However, as the number of passengers using Heathrow Airport increased over the years, Terminal 1 became increasingly overcrowded and outdated, leading to the decision to close it and replace it with more modern terminals.
After its closure, the terminal was demolished, and the land it occupied is now being used for the construction of the new Terminal 2A, as part of the Heathrow Airport's expansion plan.
